2004 WEIGHT RESTRICTION REPORT

In 2004, the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office along with the Kandiyohi County Highway Department worked approximately 117 hours of commercial vehicle weight enforcement.

The commercial vehicle weight enforcement time is mainly during the spring road restriction period.  During this time, 71 trucks were stopped and 27 vehicles were weighed.  Out of those weighed, four vehicles were cited for being overweight.

Commercial vehicle weights are enforced by four deputies from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office and in the past have worked with the assistance of the County Highway Department.

Recently newer scales have been purchased by County Highway, therefore, freeing up this detail to be done by one person.  Currently the Sheriff’s Office and the Kandiyohi County Highway Department have six portable scales of which two are mainly used due to the ability and convenience for one officer to use.

The purpose of the deputies working the road restrictions is to mainly keep overweight commercial vehicles in weight compliance on our county roads in the spring time when the frost is coming out of the ground.  During this time the roads are vulnerable to extensive damage due to overweight vehicles traveling on them.

This program has been in effect for several years with the Sheriff’s Office, leading to a dramatic increase in compliance of individuals driving heavier trucks on our county roads during this time period.    The four deputies patrol mainly on their days off allowing them to concentrate on working commercial vehicles and not having to handle other calls and traffic enforcement.

Also, during this time it gives these deputies opportunities to complete other inspections on commercial vehicles from log books, annual inspections, and equipment checks of the vehicles.

Respectfully Submitted,

Deputy Allen R. Anderson
