Investigation Unit
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office
Investigation Unit is made up of one
Detective Sergeant and four Detectives. One Detective is assigned to
work with Family Services.
Investigators follow up on reports taken
by patrol officers. They also receive reports from Family Services, the
County Attorney’s Office, and handle assignments directed by the Sheriff
and Chief Deputy. They can also assist in investigating crime scenes
with photographs, fingerprints, and other forensic evidence.
Cases that are sent to Investigations by
patrol officers are reviewed by the Detective Sergeant and if there are
leads to follow the case are assigned to an investigator. If there are
no leads, the case is filed inactive (cases are filed by type of crime.
If there is additional information the case can be reopened and
investigated). In either situation the person reporting the crime will
receive a letter notifying them of the status of their case. If it is
an active investigation they will be notified of the outcome of the
investigation when it is completed.
The Investigation Unit is also in charge
of undercover purchases such as alcohol and tobacco stings. All
background checks for hiring within the department and handled by the
Investigation Unit. The Investigation Unit also assists with internal
investigations for other agencies.
