PREGNANCY TO PARENTING

Evening Classes For Expectant Parents and Coaches

Pregnancy is a time of great change and anticipation. All mothers can benefit from learning more about her pregnancy and her new baby.
Fathers and labor coaches can share in this experience. Their support role is defined to prepare for the birth of their child.

Kandiyohi County Public Health in collaboration with Rice Memorial Hospital offers a variety of options for the expectant parent(s).
Call early in your pregnancy to discuss the best opportunity for you.

We charge $30 per couple registration fee.* Assistance is available to help with the cost of the class for those who qualify.

INSTRUCTORS
Kandiyohi County Public Health Maternal Child Health nurses and Rice Memorial Hospital Obstetrical nurses will be teaching individual sessions and leading the hospital tour.


We reserve the right to cancel if minimum enrollment not met.
*Grants and other funding make it possible to offer the classes to you at a reduced rate. Full tuition for the series of classes is $156. However, your cost is $30 for the series. If you participate in a Minnesota Health Care Program, all costs for the classes may be covered by your health plan. Please provide this information on the registration form.


PREGNANCY TO PARENTING TOPICS
Evening Classes (6:15pm to 8:45pm)

Sessions 1, 2, and 4 will involve breathing and relaxation techniques. Please bring one or two pillows and/or a blanket or large beach towel for these relaxation techniques.

"A Great Start"
Fetal Development and changes in your body as the baby grows. Introduction to prenatal exercises and relaxation techniques. Eating for you and your baby. Preterm labor signs and symptoms.

"This is Why It Is Called Labor"
A look at labor and delivery. The signs of labor as it approaches and when to go to the hospital. Relaxation tools to use during labor, including breathing patterns. Role of support person/coach.

"Parenting - Joy to Last a Lifetime"
A local physician will introduce you to your newborn’s appearance and health concerns. Ways to feed your baby. Attachment to your baby and ways to nurture your baby. Information on purchasing your first Child Passenger Safety Seat for your newborn and how your baby’s passenger safety seat needs will change as they grow.

“Prepare for Delivery"

This is an informative night for parents-to-be at Rice Hospital (fourth night). Examine and receive instruction on the instruments and equipment used during labor and delivery. A look at where baby's birth will take place and a final chance to practice breathing and relaxation with the help of OB nurses. What to expect during the Post Partum period. How to care for yourself.


Pregnancy to Parenting Classes

Our evening classes meet for four weeks from 6:15 - 8:45pm at the Kandiyohi County Health and Human Services Building, Lower Level, Multipurpose Room. The last class will include a tour of Rice Memorial Hospital’s Obstetrics Department.

  • The handbook charge for the breast feeding class is $5.00 per couple. The class is free. If you are interested, call Kandiyohi County Public Health at 320-231-7860.

    Women, Infant, and Children Nutrition Program
    A program that provides:

    • For eligible pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children to age five.

    Family Home Visiting Provides

    • Home visits during your pregnancy or after your baby is born
    • Information about your health and how to care for your baby
    • Individualized parenting education

    Immunizations:

    • Baby shots protect children from some very serious diseases.
    • Make sure your child is protected. Call for a schedule of immunization clinics held at Kandiyohi County Public Health.
