Vulnerable Adult/Adult Protective Services
: Adult Protective Services are an effort to identify and prevent maltreatment of vulnerable adults. There are three basic kinds of maltreatment:
- Abuse-physical, emotional and sexual - Neglect-care giver neglect or self neglect - Financial Exploitation
The Minnesota Vulnerable Adult Act outlines the types of abuse and the role of Adult Protective Services.
State agencies such as Department of Human Services and Department of Health investigate complaints in facilities that are licensed and regulated (such as Adult foster care homes, nursing facilities, hospitals). Family Services are required to investigate community reports. Vulnerable adult investigations are completed in conjunction with Kandiyohi County Attorney’s office and the local law enforcement agencies.
How do I report maltreatment of a vulnerable adult? In order to make reporting easier and assure better communication, every county has a designated “Common Entry Point” to receive all reports of known or suspected abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation of vulnerable adults. The Common Entry Point for Kandiyhoi County is Family Services 320-231-7800 during business hours and Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s office, 320-235-1260, after hours, weekends and holidays.
